Ballonius

Play Ballonius Now!

Ballonious is a game made by myself and Aaron Cox for the Jay Is Games Casual Game Design Competition #4. The theme was Ball Physics. Aaron and I opted for a very literal approach to the theme, but decided our twist would be this:

Most people plunking in Box2D to Flash would end up with rigid body physics. We thought to ourselves, what if the balls weren't hard? What if they were soft and gooey and penetrable?

Well, since the game was basically made in the weekend before the contest was over, we didn't explore this concept nearly as well as we could have... (Oh look! Rigid collisions!)

This game also reveals a design challenge that I struggle with often on my independent projects: I have a fun mechanic, now what do I need to do to make a whole suite of exciting, differentiated levels from it?
